Whether you’re a veteran Toyota owner or buying your first one, you may realize that you like both the 2022 Toyota Avalon and the 2023 Toyota Camry. What makes them different? We posed this question to our Ira Toyota Saco experts, and they came up with this guide, specially designed for car buyers near Saco, Portland, and Scarborough, Maine.
Both vehicles can be equipped with a 3.5L V6 engine, which produces 301 horsepower with 267 lb-ft of torque. While the Avalon comes standard with this engine, the Camry comes standard with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. This pushes out 203 horsepower with 184 lb-ft of torque. The 3.5L engine is an option for this sedan.
If you’re always on the road, commuting or making frequent forays into Boston, you’ll want the most fuel-efficient model. The Camry achieves an EPA-estimated 28 city and 39 highway MPG, while the Avalon reaches an EPA-estimated 22 city and 32 highway MPG.1,2
Adjusting to the road the way you see fit will feel a little different in each vehicle. Front-wheel drive comes in every trim of the Avalon, but you’ll also get multiple driving modes. Some trims offer the 3-Mode Switch with Eco, Normal, and Sport, while others can add a 4-Mode Switch that also provides the combined Custom and Sport+.
With the Camry, you’ll get a choice between front-wheel and all-wheel drive. Plus, the 3-Mode Switch adds to that versatility. This model, though, does not contain a 4-Mode upgrade.
A variety of amenities populate both vehicles if you choose. With the Avalon, heated front seats come standard, while you can add heated rear seats. For hot weather days, the available ventilated front seats can be a pleasure! While the Camry features all the perks for the front, the rear seats do not have optional heat.
Both cars can be furnished with either SofTex®-trimmed seats or those made of leather. Camry drivers can count on fabric trim for base models.
More room appears in the Avalon with a passenger volume of 104.3 cubic feet. If you’re not in need of that much room, the Camry’s 100.4 cubic feet will suffice.
In general, the Avalon provides more space with a few similarities, like the front legroom. Let’s review the details:

Many of the technology gadgets and safety systems mirror each other. Some may be standard in the Avalon and optional in the Camry. These include:
If you’re looking for more advanced assistance in parking, the Avalon offers the available Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Rear Cross-Traffic Braking. With the Camry, this is not on the menu.
Music fans may want to consider that the Avalon can be outfitted with a 14-speaker Premium JBL® audio system. The same quality you’ll find in this system can be found in the Camry as well. The difference is that the Camry provides nine speakers, so if you prefer a more encompassing wall of sound, go for the Avalon.
