Take on your commutes around Portland confidently when you drive a Toyota. The Toyota Safety Sense™ package comes standard on many new Toyota vehicles and features a host of advanced systems, including the incredible Toyota Pre-Collision System. But how does the Toyota Pre-Collision System work to keep you safe and sound?

This system uses a front-facing camera and laser to alert you when you need to hit the brakes since there are objects in your path. When needed, the Toyota Pre-Collision System can even bring your vehicle to a complete stop. Find out more about this feature with Ira Toyota Saco below!

How Does the Toyota Pre-Collision System Work?

So, how does the Toyota Pre-Collision System work to help you avoid accidents in South Portland? Let’s take a closer look at the inner workings of this pre-collision system here:

  • As described above, the Toyota Pre-Collision System relies on a front-facing camera and radar system.
  • The system uses multiple components to measure the distance between your vehicle and the upcoming object in your path.
  • The system factors in your speed and determines the likelihood of a collision.
  • If the system detects that a collision is likely to occur, your vehicle will give you an audiovisual cue that you need to apply the brakes as soon as possible.
  • If you’re unable to brake, the pre-collision system may apply the brakes or deploy them at full force to prevent a collision.

Toyota Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection

You might have already noticed that there are a number of different versions of the Toyota Pre-Collision System that are available. A common version of the package, Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS 2.0), includes Pedestrian Detection. The latest versions, TSS 2.5 and TSS 2.5+, also incorporate intersection support and emergency steering functionality to help prevent collisions with motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

In your Toyota vehicle with Pedestrian Detection, the system uses millimeter-wave radar to scan your surroundings in Scarborough while making turns and proceeding forward with your route. The system can detect oncoming vehicles or pedestrians while you make a left-hand turn. Additionally, the system can detect pedestrians when you’re turning right. The system may deploy audio and visual signals and even braking power when needed to prevent collisions.
